Creating the Dotdotpop biker jacket

Bold fashion doesn’t have to be loud or chaotic—it can be playful, polished, and completely unique. That’s the idea that sparked Dotdotpop and its very first product: a faux leather biker jacket like no other. I wanted to create something that felt fun yet sophisticated, colorful yet cohesive. It wasn’t about following trends but breaking away from them with a fresh perspective.
The journey to bring this biker jacket to life has been a mix of creativity, problem-solving, and determination. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Dotdotpop went from an idea to a bold new reality.
Where It All Started
I’ve always loved the idea of a studded biker jacket, but I could never find one that felt right for me. Most designs leaned heavily into goth and punk rock aesthetic, with sharp spikes, silver pyramid studs, or mismatched colors that felt overwhelming. I wanted the opposite: a jacket that made a statement without looking sort of trashy and gritty.
Then one day, I glanced at my gumball machine that’s sitting on my office desk and noticed how striking gumballs actually were. Its vibrant, glossy colors and dome shapes felt playful and nostalgic—exactly the kind of vibe I wanted in a jacket. What if studs could look like hard candy? The idea felt bold, different, and exciting, and I knew I had to try to bring it to life.
Sketching the Vision
Every great design begins with a sketch. I started by imagining the biker jacket’s silhouette: slim fit, tailored and flattering, with just the right amount of edge. Today’s women biker jacket trends are very bulky and oversized. I experimented with ideas for stud placement, wanting a layout that felt balanced and classy, but not chaotic. These early sketches became the blueprint for the Dotdotpop biker jacket, capturing its candy-inspired aesthetic and bold yet wearable look.
Perfecting the Materials
Once the design was set, I had to find the perfect materials. I started with the faux leather—a buttery soft PU material that looked high-end while staying cruelty-free. Then came the zippers. I wanted them to complement the jacket’s colors without clashing, so I carefully selected samples until everything felt cohesive.
The rivets, however, were the real challenge. I spent weeks searching for manufacturers online, but most only offered standard shapes and sizes like spikes and pyramids. It was difficult to find 12mm half sphere dome-shaped studs with a height of 6mm, let alone in custom colors with a glossy finish resembling opaque hard candy. After countless emails, I finally found a manufacturer willing to create the rivets from scratch. This was a game-changer.
Once I had the rivets, I worked on perfecting the colors. The rivets and jackets needed to match perfectly—pink, blue, red, yellow, and black—creating a harmonious, unified look. This was crucial to achieving the classy aesthetic I envisioned. Unlike the mismatched colors often seen in punk jackets, Dotdotdop’s design is bold but polished.
Here are the studs on their own, I mean, come on... Don't you just want to grab one and eat it?
(*For your safety, please do NOT eat them, they are not edible!)
The studs manufacturing company was kind to show me how they are installed using a hand press machine. They also offer electric press machines for faster installation.
I ordered over 50,000 custom made studs. 10,000 of each color. That is because each jacket has between 421 to 560 studs each depending on the size of the jacket. I ordered 100 biker jackets because that was the MOQ (minimum order quantity) required from our jacket manufacturing company.
To enhance the jacket’s overall look and add an extra touch of luxury, I decided to incorporate satin ribbon details on the back of the sleeves. The ribbons had to match each jacket color perfectly, creating a seamless and elegant contrast to the candy-inspired studs. Finding the right satin ribbon samples wasn’t a challenge, but I needed them to be soft yet durable, with colors that complemented the glossy finish of the rivets. After sourcing and testing several options, I found the ideal shades that tied everything together, adding a unique and refined detail to the design.
Here is what the back of the sleeves look after they were created:
